KG Catering’s multiple hygiene lapses lead to foodborne illness outbreak, prompting penalty and business suspension.
SINGAPORE – KG Catering was fined $6,000 for failing to adhere to food safety and hygiene standards after 92 individuals contracted food poisoning from meals prepared by the company. The cases of gastroenteritis, which include symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, were reported across three separate incidents between Sept 20, 2022, and March 11, 2023.
Despite the widespread illness, none of the affected individuals required hospitalization. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) launched investigations and found several serious hygiene issues at the catering company’s premises. These included cockroach and rodent infestations, improper food storage, and poorly maintained facilities.
As a result of these violations, SFA imposed a business suspension on KG Catering from Nov 9, 2022, to Feb 1, 2023, and ordered the company to rectify the identified issues. After making the necessary improvements, the suspension was lifted.
SFA has emphasized the importance of proper food hygiene practices and called on both the food industry and consumers to play an active role in ensuring food safety. The agency also highlighted that food establishments failing to comply with cleanliness regulations can face penalties under the Environmental Public Health Act, which includes fines up to $2,000. Further fines may be imposed for ongoing violations.
