Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong receives the Omicron-based Covid-19 vaccine and urges the public, especially vulnerable groups, to stay vaccinated.
SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong received his updated Covid-19 vaccine on Nov 2, following the release of the Omicron XBB.1.5 variant-based jab. The updated vaccine was recommended by the Expert Committee on Covid-19 Vaccination to enhance protection against current and emerging strains of the virus.
In a Facebook post, PM Lee shared his personal experience with Covid-19, noting that while his symptoms were minimal, his protection against the virus could wane over time. He emphasized that even individuals who have previously contracted Covid-19, like himself, should continue to receive updated vaccinations to maintain their immunity.
PM Lee, aged 71, urged the public, particularly those aged 60 and older, those who are medically vulnerable, and residents of aged-care facilities, to get the latest vaccine. However, he clarified that the vaccine is available for everyone aged six months and above and is provided for free.
As someone who tested positive for Covid-19 twice in 2023—once in May and again in June—PM Lee reinforced that vaccination remains the best protection against the virus, helping to reduce the severity of illness and improve overall immunity.
In May 2023, after his first bout with Covid-19, he was prescribed the anti-viral medication Paxlovid due to his age. Despite the challenges, PM Lee’s experience highlights the importance of keeping vaccination records current to safeguard personal and public health.
