The new Science Centre will offer exciting exhibits and features when it opens in 2027.
SINGAPORE – The upcoming Science Centre in Jurong Lake District is set to open by 2027, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. The 55,000 sq m building, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in collaboration with Architects 61, will be 25% larger than the current center. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024, and the center will be located next to the Chinese Garden MRT station. Here’s a preview of the five highlights to expect:
Larger Children’s Gallery
The KidsSTOP gallery will double in size, offering interactive exhibits and activities for young children. Features include an outdoor waterplay area and a sensory trail at the rooftop garden, as well as specialized labs for older children to explore scientific concepts. This new area aims to inspire curiosity in younger visitors.
Fire Tornado Show
A fire tornado show will be featured at the Outdoor Amphitheatre. The show will be housed in a specially built chamber, providing visitors with a thrilling, up-close experience of this fiery phenomenon.
Attractive Views and Stargazing
The center will offer scenic views of Jurong Lake from large windows and rooftop gardens. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque surroundings or stargaze at the Observatory at night, complete with a telescope. The outdoor activity plaza will also link the Science Centre to the Jurong Lake promenade, offering an excellent space for relaxation.
Focus on Real-World Issues
The Science Centre will encourage engagement with sustainability and climate change topics through exhibits and workshops. Themes like food security and generative artificial intelligence will be explored, showcasing local innovations in sustainability and technology.
Test Bed for New Experiences
The new Science Centre will include specialized spaces like the Eco-Lab, where students can conduct experiments in a garden environment. It will also feature indoor maker spaces for hands-on exploration and experimentation, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship.
