Traffic Police to Add Electric Polestar 2 to Highway Patrol Fleet in 2024

First electric cars to patrol Singapore’s expressways as part of a sustainable initiative.

SINGAPORE – The Traffic Police (TP) will soon welcome 19 electric Polestar 2 saloons into their highway patrol fleet, set to be deployed from 2024. The Swedish car was selected after a public tender launched in October 2022.

Sustainable Shift
This marks the first time that electric vehicles (EVs) will be used for expressway patrols in Singapore, as part of the country’s broader environmental initiative. The decision to integrate Polestar 2, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive EV, aligns with Singapore’s goal to reduce emissions. The electric fleet is expected to replace older patrol vehicles, such as BMWs, Subarus, and Volvos.

Specifications and Performance
The Polestar 2’s performance exceeds the tender’s minimum requirements, offering 470km of range on Singapore roads, a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds, and a top speed of 205km/h. This fleet will be the first EVs to carry the Traffic Police’s signature expressway patrol livery.

The winning bid for the cars was around $3.8 million, including a 10-year maintenance program. The fleet will also come with retrofitted police equipment.

Green Future
This move reflects Singapore’s aim to have all vehicles running on cleaner energy by 2040, with a ban on new combustion engine cars starting in 2030. The shift to EVs is being replicated globally, with police departments in cities such as New York and London incorporating electric vehicles into their fleets.
