Over 70 Motorcyclists Fined or Investigated After Woodlands Checkpoint Operation

Joint agency crackdown targets traffic, emission, and licensing violations among motorcyclists.

SINGAPORE – A multi-agency sting at Woodlands Checkpoint on October 26 uncovered violations by over 70 motorcyclists. The operation, involving the Traffic Police (TP), National Environment Agency (NEA), and Land Transport Authority (LTA), inspected 196 motorcycles, leading to fines and investigations for multiple offences.

Key Violations Detected
Offences ranged from lacking valid insurance and licenses to improper or missing license plates. Seventeen riders are under investigation by the TP for riding without insurance or valid licenses, while the LTA identified 21 motorcycles with non-compliant license plates.

The NEA issued 37 summonses for excessive emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and noise, underscoring the importance of adhering to emission standards.

Regulatory Compliance
All vehicles, including foreign-registered motorcycles, must meet Singapore’s traffic and emission regulations. License plates must be clearly displayed, prominently positioned, and free from obstructions or decorative elements.

According to LTA guidelines, license plates must adhere to specified colors and dimensions, ensuring clarity and compliance.

Safety and Penalties
The TP emphasized the importance of traffic rule compliance and safe riding practices. Motorcyclists and pillion riders remain disproportionately involved in road accidents, making adherence to regulations critical.

Violations carry severe penalties:

Driving without a valid license: Fines up to $10,000 and imprisonment for up to three years for first-time offenders. Repeat offenders face fines of $20,000, six years in jail, and vehicle forfeiture.
Excessive emissions: Fines of $2,000 for the first offence, escalating to $5,000 for repeat violations.
Improper license plates: Fines of $1,000 and up to three months in jail.
Call for Responsible Road Use
The TP urged all road users to exercise caution and promote road safety by adhering to laws and fostering a culture of mutual care.
