Developers of Crowd Control Map Honored at Award Ceremony

Singapore’s Home Team officers recognized for innovative solutions in managing large-scale events.

In preparation for Singapore’s first post-pandemic National Day Parade in August 2022, a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohamad Faizal developed the innovative “Crowd@MarinaBay” online map. This tool provides real-time crowd density updates and area closures, enabling efficient crowd control and ensuring public safety during major events like National Day, New Year’s Eve, and Chinese New Year.

The map has been credited with saving over 2,800 man-hours annually compared to the traditional use of physical maps and manual updates. The team behind it received the Home Team Innovation Award at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Minister’s Awards Presentation Ceremony, held at the Home Team Academy on Nov 3.

DSP Mohamad Faizal emphasized the proactive measures taken to prevent crowd crushes, referencing incidents like the fatal Itaewon tragedy in 2022. He noted plans to enhance the map with augmented reality and features to guide users through crowded areas.

Recognizing Excellence
During the ceremony, 123 awards were presented to officers, teams, and agencies for their contributions to national safety and innovation. Minister for Home Affairs and Law, K. Shanmugam, acknowledged the critical role of Home Team officers in maintaining Singapore’s security. He also announced the establishment of “Home Team Day” on Feb 24, 2024, to honor officers, NSmen, and volunteers.

Among the distinguished awardees were senior crime scene specialist Seah Chee Wei and Staff Sergeant (SSG) Muhammad Tamimi Mohamad Mamsi. Mr. Seah, recognized for his forensic expertise, played a key role in solving complex crimes, including a high-profile burglary at VivoCity. Meanwhile, SSG Tamimi was commended for his heroism during the 2023 Turkey earthquake, where he rescued a 12-year-old boy from the rubble.

These accolades highlight the dedication, innovation, and professionalism of Singapore’s Home Team officers in safeguarding the nation.
