As Racist and Sexist Attacks Fly, Republicans Grapple with How to Take on Kamala Harris

The intensifying attacks on Kamala Harris put the Republican Party in a difficult position, as many worry about backlash in the election.

As Kamala Harris secures her position as the likely Democratic presidential nominee, the attacks on her, especially those that are racist and sexist, have escalated. Republican nominee Donald Trump has labeled her as “crazy,” “nuts,” and “dumb as a rock,” while right-wing activists and trolls continue to target her with harmful comments online.

These personal attacks threaten to overshadow the Republican Party’s attempts to focus on her policies, with some GOP supporters expressing concern that such rhetoric could damage their chances, particularly with Black voters—an important demographic in the upcoming election.

Interviews with Republican lawmakers and Black Republican women who support Trump reveal a desire for critiques that focus on Harris’ actions, rather than her identity. For instance, P. Rae Easley, a conservative radio host and member of the “Black Americans for Trump” coalition, cautioned against personal attacks, saying, “I think there is a way to critique her without going underneath her clothes.”

Some Republicans, such as Representative Dusty Johnson, also emphasize the importance of critiquing Harris on her policies, not her identity. However, the party’s strategy of attacking her for being a “DEI hire” (a diversity, equity, and inclusion hire) is seen by many as counterproductive, likely to alienate women and non-far-right voters. Republican pollster Whit Ayres warned that such attacks could backfire, pointing out that Harris offers a range of policies that could be targeted without resorting to personal attacks.

Despite the growing concern within the party, Trump’s campaign has yet to tone down its rhetoric. While Trump refrained from racial or gendered attacks at a July 24 rally, his inflammatory language has continued to inspire others with racist beliefs to speak out more freely.

Online, attacks have taken a particularly troubling turn, with some posts making lewd comments about Harris’ past relationships and family life. These comments have escalated since Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, further amplifying the animosity.

Despite the barrage of personal attacks, Harris’ campaign remains focused on her policy agenda, with her spokesperson asserting that the attacks are backfiring and drawing more support. As the election draws closer, it seems the Republican Party must decide whether to shift focus away from personal attacks and back to policy criticisms to maintain credibility with voters.
