Fire at Orchard Road Building Involves Charcoal Stove; Cause Under Investigation
A fire broke out in Lucky Plaza on Orchard Road on October 20, 2024, leading to two individuals being hospitalized and 20 others evacuated. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to the fire at 9:45 AM, which originated from a charcoal stove in a unit on the sixth floor of the building. By the time SCDF arrived, the fire had been extinguished by the public using buckets of water.
Although the fire caused significant smoke and a burnt smell, witness Jane Z Hwee Mei reported that many people continued to shop on the lower floors of the building. She described the evacuation of her hair salon on the sixth floor, which was far from the affected unit, as orderly despite initial concerns over potential explosions.
Security personnel and SCDF officers conducted evacuations, and emergency services took two people to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Lucky Plaza, a popular shopping mall and dining destination, especially for Filipino expatriates, has since returned to normal operations.
