10 More Electric Buses to Hit Singapore Roads by December

Public transportation in Singapore takes another step toward sustainability with the addition of 10 new electric buses.

Starting December 2024, 10 new electric buses will be deployed in Singapore, enhancing the city’s efforts to offer quieter, more eco-friendly public transport. These buses, part of a batch of 360 electric buses purchased by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in 2023, will serve bus services 86, 107, and 159, which cover routes in the north-east and central areas.

These electric buses, made by Chinese vehicle manufacturer BYD, are the first to be charged at the new Sengkang West bus depot. This state-of-the-art depot, located in Seletar West Road 1, is the first multi-storey facility for buses with large-scale electric vehicle charging systems. The depot, which cost over $400 million, is expected to begin operations in early 2025, with charging stations capable of fully charging a bus in less than 1½ hours.

The introduction of these 10 buses brings the total number of electric buses in operation in Singapore to 70. The move is part of LTA’s long-term goal to replace older diesel buses with electric ones, with the full fleet of 420 electric buses expected to be deployed by the end of 2025. This development supports Singapore’s ongoing commitment to reducing emissions and promoting green technology in public transport.
