Red discharge traced to car shampoo prompts investigation of local business.
A car wash company is under investigation after red discharge was found flowing through a canal near Kembangan MRT station in Singapore. The red water, which was first noticed on October 13 and again on October 17, was later identified as car shampoo conditioning liquid.
An eyewitness, Mr. Chua, reported seeing the red discharge while walking home on October 13. Initially, he was surprised, as he had never seen such water in the canal before. The red water extended for about 400 meters, piquing his curiosity about the source.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) responded to the report and conducted investigations. On the morning of October 14, after heavy rain, NEA officers found no issues with the water quality, as the dissolved oxygen and pH levels were within normal ranges. However, the red water reappeared on October 17, prompting a second round of investigations.
Upon inspection, NEA traced the discharge to a local car wash company, instructing it to stop the disposal of the liquid and clean the affected public drains. The authorities are now investigating the company under the Environmental Protection and Management Act for potential pollution.
This is not the first such incident; in 2015, a similar situation occurred in Jurong West, where reddish water was linked to organic solvents and dyes used in cleaning and manufacturing industries.
