A tragic accident highlights the risks motorcyclists face on the road.
A 43-year-old motorcyclist lost his life on October 24, 2024, after his motorcycle skidded on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) towards Changi Airport at around 4:50 AM. Authorities from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the police were quickly alerted to the accident. Despite paramedics’ efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rising Traffic Deaths Among Motorcyclists
Motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable groups of road users in Singapore. Data from the first half of 2024 shows that motorcyclists and pillion riders were involved in over 54% of all traffic accidents and accounted for nearly 62% of traffic fatalities. The number of deaths among motorcyclists and pillion riders has sharply risen by more than 40%, with 45 deaths reported in the first half of 2024, compared to 32 in the same period of 2023.
This marks a troubling trend, with the number of motorcyclist fatalities also increasing by almost 45% from 2022 to 2023, from 47 to 68. The rise in traffic-related deaths among motorcyclists underscores the need for enhanced safety measures and awareness to protect this vulnerable group on the roads.
