A showcase of maritime heritage, Italian culture, and naval innovation.
The Amerigo Vespucci, a 93-year-old Italian Navy tall ship, is docked at Singapore’s Marina Bay Cruise Centre as part of its 20-month global tour. This majestic vessel, with its three towering masts and traditional design, serves as both a training platform for cadets and a cultural ambassador for Italy.
Open for Public Viewing
Docked from 24 to 28 October 2024, the ship has captivated Singaporeans, offering free public tours. While most slots were booked early, visitors can still explore the Italian-themed expo, Villaggio Italia, at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre. This event promotes Italian culture, products, and innovation, with opportunities to visit the ship depending on availability.
A Dual Mission
Launched in 1931, the Amerigo Vespucci embodies Italy’s naval traditions while embracing modern technology. The 101-meter, 4,200-ton vessel is equipped with auxiliary electric-diesel propulsion alongside its sails. It trains cadets from the Italian Naval Academy, who spend three months aboard during their education.
The current global tour began in July 2023 and includes stops across the Americas, Asia, and Australia. The next leg will take the ship to Indonesia, accompanied by six Republic of Singapore Navy cadets for training.
Collaborative Innovation
During its Singapore stay, the Amerigo Vespucci is conducting trials for next-generation International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) standards. These trials, involving electronic navigational charts, are in partnership with Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the IHO-Singapore Innovation and Technology Laboratory. The goal is to enhance maritime safety and navigation.
Strengthening Italy-Singapore Relations
Italy’s Ambassador to Singapore, Dante Brandi, emphasized the ship’s role in deepening ties between the two maritime nations. The Villaggio Italia expo complements the ship’s visit, offering an immersive experience in Italian culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship.
Deputy Minister Valentino Valentini highlighted the expo’s aim to create a sense of connection with Italy, showcasing the country’s global innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.
A Legacy of Beauty and Function
Dubbed “the most beautiful ship in the world” by American sailors, the Amerigo Vespucci represents a timeless blend of tradition and modernity. Its presence in Singapore underscores Italy’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange, maritime innovation, and international collaboration.
