Company cites cost constraints and digital transformation goals amid global media challenges.
SINGAPORE – SPH Media announced on November 4 the layoff of 34 employees, representing about 10% of its technology division, as part of an organizational restructuring. The move aims to streamline operations and reduce redundancies amidst the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital media landscape.
Chief Operating Officer Loh Yuh Yiing and Chief Technology Officer Kaythaya Maw informed staff via email, describing the decision as “difficult” but necessary to ensure the division’s sustainability. Affected employees will receive comprehensive severance packages, career coaching, and counseling services in accordance with tripartite guidelines.
SPH Media’s technology expenditure currently accounts for 20% of its annual costs, with payroll consuming nearly two-thirds of that figure. Despite initial cost-cutting measures focused on non-payroll expenses, job cuts became unavoidable.
Globally, media companies face declining revenues and rising digital demands, and SPH Media is no exception. Ms. Loh stated, “SPH faces similar pressures to find a sustainable way forward,” emphasizing the importance of balancing operational needs with financial constraints.
Organizational Changes
Effective November 5, the technology division has been reorganized into three departments:
CTO Office – Led by Jensen Boey, supporting CTO Kaythaya Maw.
Information Technology Department – Led by Christopher Lim.
Product and Engineering Department – Temporarily led by Kaythaya Maw.
Additionally, the data team has been transitioned into a standalone Business Insights and Analytics Department under the corporate and operations pillar. Reporting directly to Ms. Loh, this team will provide strategic insights across the organization.
Ms. Loh assured staff that no further layoffs are planned, though regular reviews and resource optimization will continue as business needs evolve. The company aims to stabilize operations while ensuring clear leadership focus in technology administration, IT infrastructure, and digital product development.
