Man Charged with Stabbing Priest in the Mouth, Causing Serious Injuries

Basnayake Keith Spencer faces serious charges after allegedly attacking Reverend Christopher Lee at St Joseph’s Church.

The Attack
Basnayake Keith Spencer, 37, has been charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon after allegedly stabbing Reverend Christopher Lee at St Joseph’s Church in Bukit Timah on November 9, 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 PM during evening mass when Father Lee was distributing communion. Spencer is said to have approached the priest and attacked him with a foldable knife.

The stabbing resulted in an 8cm laceration on Father Lee’s tongue, a 3cm cut on his upper left lip, and a 4cm cut at the corner of his mouth. The injuries were severe enough to endanger the priest’s life.

Details of the Arrest
The assailant was quickly subdued by churchgoers and detained until the police arrived. Spencer was arrested, and five weapons, including the knife used in the attack, were found in his possession. A video circulating online shows Spencer, bloodied and in a white T-shirt, being escorted away by the police.

Possible Penalties
Spencer’s case will be heard again on December 2, 2024. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or up to 15 years in prison, along with possible caning and/or a fine.

Father Lee’s Condition
Father Lee, 57, was conscious when taken to the National University Hospital and is now in stable condition. He is under observation to ensure proper recovery. Despite the trauma, he remains in good spirits, with his recovery being closely monitored by medical professionals.

Context of the Attack
The police have indicated that the attack does not appear to be terrorism-related or religiously motivated. Spencer had previously declared himself a Christian to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and had visited the church before. To reassure the public, police patrols were increased at places of worship following the incident.
