Pure Grit: Farhanna Farid Empowers Women Through Powerlifting

The Singaporean world champion redefines strength, inspiring women to push limits and challenge stereotypes.

Breaking Barriers in Powerlifting
Farhanna Farid, a world record-breaking powerlifter from Singapore, is changing the face of a traditionally male-dominated sport. By empowering women from diverse backgrounds to take on challenges they never thought possible, she has become a trailblazer not just in powerlifting but also in redefining resilience and strength.

Her coaching journey began against the odds. As one of the few female coaches in the sport, her advice was initially dismissed. Even some of her clients doubted her capabilities, but her empathy and deep understanding of their struggles helped her build trust.

From Accidental Discovery to World Champion
Farhanna’s journey into powerlifting started unexpectedly in 2017 when she casually lifted 140kg during a mock meet at the gym. This untrained lift marked the beginning of a record-setting career. She made history in 2018 as the first female Singaporean athlete to win international gold in the Asian Classic Powerlifting Championships under-52kg category.

Since then, she has broken nine world records, including her latest milestone of lifting 209kg at the 2024 World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships in Lithuania.

Overcoming Setbacks with Resilience
In March 2023, a severe back injury threatened her career. However, with determination and support, Farhanna returned stronger, breaking another world record just three months later. This experience reinforced her belief in the power of perseverance.

“Powerlifting isn’t just about physical strength,” she shares. “It’s about mental resilience and the belief that you can achieve anything with hard work and commitment.”

Empowering Others to Embrace Strength
Beyond her achievements, Farhanna’s passion lies in empowering others. Through her initiative, Valkyrie Powerlifting, she creates a supportive space for women to challenge their limits and embrace the sport.

She is also driving change as the marketing and sponsorship lead at Powerlifting Singapore, helping local athletes compete internationally. Her future plans include organizing a women-only meet to encourage greater female participation in the sport.

Farhanna emphasizes, “It’s never too late or difficult to start. With the right coaching, guidance, and commitment, anyone can redefine their limits.”
