PM Lawrence Wong Meets Chinese President Xi Jinping on APEC Summit Sidelines

The two leaders reaffirm strong bilateral ties and explore future cooperation opportunities.

On November 15, 2024, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since PM Wong assumed office in May 2024.

The 20-minute discussion highlighted the excellent state of Singapore-China relations, which were formalized in April 2023 with an “all-round high-quality future-oriented partnership.” PM Wong emphasized the strong economic ties between the two countries, with China being Singapore’s largest trading partner and Singapore the largest foreign direct investor in China.

Both leaders affirmed the importance of their relationship, with Mr. Xi noting that Singapore-China ties have become a global model for mutually beneficial development. The two sides also discussed future cooperation, particularly in the green and digital economies, as well as regional and international developments, including upholding the rules-based multilateral trading system and the Taiwan Strait situation.

The meeting also reaffirmed the strong and multi-faceted cooperation between Singapore and China, with plans to continue building on their 35 years of diplomatic relations, which will be celebrated in 2025.
