Red car collides with bus; investigations highlight rising concerns over drink-driving incidents.
A 36-year-old man was arrested for drink driving following a collision with an SBS Transit bus in Clementi, Singapore, on 13 November 2024. The accident, which occurred along Commonwealth Avenue West at 12:20 am, resulted in minor damages and no serious injuries.
Photos shared by Lianhe Zaobao depict a red car with a crushed hood positioned behind the bus, whose bumper was dislodged onto the road. According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the man sustained minor injuries but refused hospital transport.
Grace Wu, a spokesperson for SBS Transit, confirmed that the bus captain involved was unharmed. Authorities are conducting investigations into the incident.
The collision comes amidst concerning statistics shared by the Traffic Police in August 2024. Drink-driving accidents rose to 96 cases in the first half of 2024, up from 88 in the same period of 2023. However, arrests for drink driving declined slightly, from 853 in early 2023 to 812 during the same period in 2024.
In a separate incident, SMRT Buses announced disciplinary measures for a bus captain filmed running a red light at Jurong Pier Road on 9 November. A dash cam video shared by SG Road Vigilante captured an SMRT bus disregarding a red light while another vehicle approached the junction.
SMRT Deputy Managing Director Vincent Gay stated that the company has completed an investigation and will take action against the bus captain. He emphasized that their bus captains receive regular training and are routinely reminded of road safety protocols.
