Tanglin and Dawson Road Upgrades Announced

Major road extensions and improvements set to boost connectivity by 2028.

Singapore’s Tanglin and Dawson areas are set for significant road improvements, including a 1.2km road extension and widened lanes, to accommodate rising traffic demands and support future developments. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) aims to begin construction in mid-2025, targeting completion by the end of 2028.

Key Upgrades and Enhancements
The planned developments include:

A 1.2km extension of Kay Siang Road connecting to Queensway.
Widening Tanglin Road and Kay Siang Road from one lane each way to two lanes each way.
2.2km of cycling paths along Kay Siang Road, Tanglin Road, and near Margaret Drive.
Installation of three new bus stops and relocation of eight existing ones.
These improvements aim to ease traffic congestion and enhance accessibility for growing residential and commercial developments, such as SkyOasis@Dawson and SkyParc@Dawson, completed in 2021.

Mixed Reactions from Residents
Residents expressed varied opinions on the upgrades. Some, like cybersecurity engineer Goh Khai Hong, welcomed the changes, noting that the new Kay Siang Road extension provides an alternative to the often-congested Margaret Drive. “It’s hard to merge into fast-moving traffic on Queensway; this extension offers a solution,” he said.

Others, such as Chloe Tan, a part-time media executive, questioned the effectiveness of the improvements, arguing that congestion at Queensway’s merging points remains unaddressed.

Housewife Elakkiya Meganathan, a SkyOasis@Dawson resident, highlighted the need for additional pedestrian crossings on Margaret Drive for her children’s safety, while undergraduate Ong Jia Cheng preferred cycling along Alexandra Canal Linear Park, citing its more pleasant environment and fewer traffic stops.

Future Development in the Area
A 9,522.3 sq m plot in Margaret Drive has been earmarked for a private residential project comprising two 40-story blocks with about 460 units, adding to the anticipated traffic volume.

Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Eric Chua, overseeing Queenstown, emphasized that the improvements will enhance access to major expressways like the Ayer Rajah and Pan-Island expressways while easing congestion at critical junctions.
