Empowering Through Strength: Farhanna Farid’s Journey in Powerlifting

The Singaporean Powerlifter Defies Norms, Inspiring Women to Embrace Their Power

Farhanna Farid, a Singaporean world record holder in powerlifting, is not only breaking records but also breaking down barriers in a sport traditionally dominated by men. She has become a beacon of strength, resilience, and empowerment, guiding women from varied backgrounds into the realm of powerlifting, where they can discover and harness their own potential.

When she began her coaching career, Farhanna faced skepticism due to the scarcity of female coaches in powerlifting. “At the gym, my advice would often be disregarded,” she recalls, highlighting how she had to prove herself. However, her empathy and understanding of women’s unique challenges in the sport have won over her clients, allowing her to foster an environment of trust and growth.

Farhanna’s journey into powerlifting was accidental yet profound. Initially accompanying her then-boyfriend, now husband, to the gym, she unexpectedly lifted 140kg during a casual session, which was above the national record at the time. This sparked her passion, leading her to become a formidable figure in the sport.

Her achievements are numerous, including being the first Singaporean woman to secure an international gold in the under-52kg open category in 2018, and setting or breaking the deadlift world record nine times. Her most recent record was set in June 2024 at the World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships in Lithuania, lifting an impressive 209kg.

Despite facing a significant back injury, Farhanna’s determination propelled her back to the platform, demonstrating not just physical but mental fortitude. “Coming out stronger after this pushed me to my boundaries,” she reflects, emphasizing the sport’s role in personal growth.

Beyond her personal accolades, Farhanna is committed to uplifting others through powerlifting. She founded Valkyrie Powerlifting to create a supportive space for women to explore their strength. As the marketing and sponsorship team lead at Powerlifting Singapore, she works to elevate the sport’s profile and participation, especially among women, planning a women-only meet in 2025.

Her message is clear: powerlifting isn’t just for athletes; it’s a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. “I hope to make the sport more accessible to the general population and show that it’s never too late or difficult
