Mr. Yeah Hiang Nam shares insights on maintaining harmony while running a family enterprise.
SINGAPORE – With 47 outlets across the nation, ValueMax pawnshop chain is a testament to Mr. Yeah Hiang Nam’s entrepreneurial success. Speaking with executive editor Sumiko Tan, he reflected on his journey from running a small gold workshop to leading a public-listed company managed alongside his three children.
For Mr. Yeah, family involvement in business is crucial, but he draws a firm line when it comes to in-laws. “In-laws bring a different dynamic that can complicate decision-making,” he explained. “It’s better to keep the structure simple and focused.”
His daughter, Ms. Yeah Lee Ching, who serves as ValueMax’s managing director, grew up immersed in the gold trade. From a young age, she helped her father with tasks like stamping ornaments with the “916” hallmark, which she fondly remembers as playful and rewarding.
The father-daughter duo exemplifies trust and camaraderie in their professional relationship. “Working with my children feels like working with friends,” said Mr. Yeah, emphasizing the harmony that comes from shared goals and mutual respect.
ValueMax’s success story illustrates the delicate balance of keeping family at the heart of the business while ensuring professional boundaries to avoid potential conflicts.
