9 Weeks’ Jail for Woman Who Chanted Gang Slogans on TikTok to Earn Virtual Gifts

A woman used gang slogans to attract attention and profit from TikTok live streams.

A Singaporean woman, Nur Syafiqa Abdullah, 22, was sentenced to nine weeks in jail and fined $600 on October 24, 2024, after posting TikTok videos in which she chanted gang slogans. She sought to gain attention and earn money from virtual gifts exchanged during live streams.

In an unrelated case, she was also disqualified from holding any class of driving license for two years upon release after being caught riding a rented motorcycle without a license.

Nur had pleaded guilty to one count of acting as a member of a secret society on September 6, along with two traffic-related offenses. During her live streams in May and June 2023, she chanted gang slogans from her Sengkang flat and received virtual gifts, converting them to approximately S$83.

Encouraged by her earnings, she recorded additional videos in July 2023, including clips at East Coast Park and on a thrill ride at Clarke Quay. These videos garnered significant attention, amassing between 270,800 and 499,200 views by August 2023.

A police report was filed on August 16, 2023, by a man who accused her of promoting secret societies. Nur was arrested shortly afterward but reoffended in December 2023 when she illegally rode a rented motorcycle in Kaki Bukit.

She is expected to begin serving her sentence in January 2025.
