Police crackdown on illegal betting following the closure of the Singapore Turf Club.
In a significant operation targeting illegal horse betting activities, 73 individuals are currently under investigation for their suspected roles in such operations. The investigation, which followed the closure of the Singapore Turf Club on October 5, involved raids across various locations in Singapore between October 30 and November 10.
The suspects, 70 men and 3 women aged 52 to 93, are believed to have acted as illegal bookmakers, runners, and punters. During the operation, authorities seized over $43,000 in cash, mobile phones, and horse betting paraphernalia from locations including Banda Street, Toa Payoh, and Yishun.
The Singapore Police Force stated that the operation was part of their continuous efforts to combat illegal gambling, emphasizing that Singapore Pools is the only legal operator for sports, lottery, and horse betting in the country.
The crackdown serves as a strong warning to anyone involved in illegal gambling activities, with penalties under the Gambling Control Act that include fines up to $10,000, up to six months in jail, or both.
